AQ Works in Windows 10

Windows 10 was released and with a new operating system comes questions of what programs will continue to work and what programs will have problems in the new operating system?

Ancestral Quest is one of the programs that will continue to work without any difficulties as you consider upgrading your operating system to this newer version.

Currently there are a number of individual customers who have been using this without any problems.

Just a reminder of some of the great features in Ancestral Quest:

Research Timeline: The research timeline is intended to help you see clues that will assist you in researching your family history. This new tool allows you to see the events in a person's lifetime. Sometimes, when you see pertinent events that may have affected your ancestors, it draws your attention to other resources you could look at to learn more about them.

Color Coding: There is a filing system based on four colors that has gained popularity among genealogists over the past several years. This highly requested and anticipated feature utilizes that concept and allows you to add background colors to the name boxes for individuals and/or family lines. The color coding will display on various screens and reports in AQ.

Tags: Create your own set of Tags and assign up to three tags to the various individuals in your database. This has proved to be a wildly popular new feature--some users cannot live without them, now! The tags display on various screens and reports in AQ.

Fan Chart: The popular Fan Chart has just gotten better with two new options. With the color coding, you can now generate a Four-Color Fan Chart. You can also now include siblings in the first generation of the chart.

Using AQ with a PAF Database?

Ancestral Quest is unique in that it allows one to continue to use it even though one may still be using their PAF files in AQ.

Changing a .PAF file to an .AQ file is not an automatic thing. Many who are using Ancestral Quest may not realize they are using it with their PAF file because the additional step of conversion has not happened yet. Often when speaking to an individual they are surprised it is still a PAF file as they are working in Ancestral Quest.

When one first locates their PAF file and they view it all in tack they are truly surprised and elated. At this point most continue to research and add family information to their file never realizing that a conversion of the file needs to take place to take advantage of the additional features Ancestral Quest has to offer.

It feels like it is a newer version of PAF as it allows you to work with Family Tree. There are some limitations if one continues to use program with their PAF file, a few of the features that do not work are:
  • Bookmarks
  • Color Coding
  • Tags
  • Converting Names to Mixed Case
  • Convert Place Abbreviations
  • Change log
Clicking here will provide you with a full list of the limitations.

To convert a PAF file to an AQ file we have a video to help, click here to see how easy it is to complete this task.

The choice is still the user, however, it is important to learn the advantages of having full use of Ancestral Quest and all its amazing features!

Decisions on Upgrading..

You have AQ 12.1 or earlier and have been postponing upgrading as you are happy with your current software.

Sometimes you think that, if it is working OK, why should I upgrade to a newer version?

The answer is simple, you are not taking advantage of all the latest features that have been added to make Ancestral Quest a better product for you while giving you many new features to make your family history that much better.

Ancestral Quest 14 has been a major upgrade from 12.1 and earlier versions. It offers many of the highly anticipated new features:

1) The Research Timeline
2) Color Coding
3) Tags
4) New Fan Colorful Fan Charts
5) Many new enhancements with FamilySearch Family Tree

To learn more about these features check out our webpage here.

Many additional features have been added to the above list since this release in June, 2012. There have been 22 updates since that time to the present.

Take advantage of upgrading for just 19.95 with a download at the AQ Store and enjoy all the new features for the new year!

Merging Duplicates Using AQ Intelligent Matching..

Merging individuals can be challenging if one is not quite sure how to proceed using this feature in Ancestral Quest.

Clicking on the Icon that looks like the one above will take you to the Merging screen which looks like this:

Taking a good look at this match/merge screen, one can choose how to proceed. In order to allow the program to find the duplicates, one can simply click on the "Enable Intelligent Matching" which will put a check in that box.

You also can alter the way the program searches your database by clicking on "Options" which brings up the following menu or you can leave these settings as they are listed here:

The next step is to click "Next Match" which allows Ancestral Quest to search through your family files database and locate possible matches. Here is the first match it found from my own file:

Using the color coding at the top I see the entry that was on the left in Green and the entry that was on the right in Red, the Black shows what the resulting merge would look like in my family file database.

Looking close one can also see check marks and arrows. The "Legend" up in the right hand corner shows what those items mean:

If you want to change how the program is dealing with those items, one just clicks on the box and the mark that is in the box will disappear and that piece of information will just disappear.

When you click on "Merge" the merge takes place and is reflected on the screen showing anything added to the notes or any changes to dates. The merge is now complete.

Clicking the next match allows you to continue with removing duplicates from your family file database and will continue to bring up duplicates until it finds no more. When done you simply click on "Close" and are returned to your program to continue with either research or whatever you wish to work on.

Take advantage of this great feature in Ancestral Quest to help you remove your duplicates!
