Determining Relationship

by Gringer (talk)
Trolling through your family file one can easily stumble on an unfamiliar family surname as you work backwards.

When doing family history research, the number of individuals in your family file doubles with each generation and so simply going back to your 6th great-grandparents will give you at least 256 individuals. This does not count the children of these ancestors and their families, so your family file quickly grows as you continue to research.

Locate the two people you want to find their relationship first. Write down their RIN numbers. Now in Ancestral Quest, to calculate the 'blood'relationship between two people go to Tools, scroll down and click on "Calculators" than "Relationship":

In the resulting box that opens up, click the "Search" box and enter the first number, for this blog we will use my mother who is RIN # 861:

Now, clicking on the second "Search Box" enter the 2nd RIN number and then click "Calculate":

This shows that Francois Coutu is the 4th great-grandfather to my mother. If there had been no blood relationship, the program informs you of this. To view this is a diagram, simply click on the button that says "Print to File". You will asked where you want to save the text file and then if you wish to view it. This is the results:

As you can see, it clearly shows how these individuals are related.

Enjoy this and many other features in Ancestral Quest!

Discovering Relationships

Determining relationships between individuals in your family file can be confusing but is always worth checking out.

Using Ancestral Quest's relationhip tool this process is made simple. Go to Tools, scroll and click on "Calculators",slide and click on "Relationship".

Clicking on "Relationship" brings you to where you check that between two people in your database.

Lots of times, opportunities arise where you wonder how 2 particular people are related; at this point it is good to write down their RIN numbers so you can find out.

Highlight the first individual in this match and he or she will automatically be in the top section, then clicking on the 2nd "Search button" allows you to enter in the second person and then you click on "Calculate" to learn their relationship.

This shows that the relationship between these two is they are "1st Cousins".

We'll review how to create a drop line chart to display this nicely in a future blog.

Setting those Relationships..

Do you struggle trying to figure out how person no. 452 is related to you?

Often it happens that you discover a new individual and are curious as to their exact relationship or one is just curious.

Ancestral Quest allows you to set your relationship to whomever you wish in your family database file.

This is done by highlighting the individual you want to set the relationship to and then going to "Tools" and scroll down and click on "Relationship Indicators":

If the root person is not the person you want, click on the 'Search' button to locate the correct person which would be the highlighted individual, put their number in the box and click OK and then click OK one more time.

When you click that second 'OK', the programs goes through your whole family database file and re-sets the relationships to that person, the message you receive looks like this:

Click that last 'OK' and the relationships have now been set to that individual. To view them, put your file in the 'Family' view by clicking on the 'Family' tab. The relationships show above the individuals as such:

This can be done with anyone in your family database file and show just how you are related to that expected visitor!
