Moving Notes into FamilySearch FamilyTree

Notes are a convenient way to add bits of information for an ancestor. Whether its a copy of an obituary or a link to a newspaper article, or additional back up information specific to that one ancestor.

In Ancestral Quest, one simply clicks on the "Notes" button from the "Edit Individual" screen and enters all that one wishes to be there. Knowing that this is a "Flat-text" file, no formatting occurs in this format. You can add quotes and punctuation but that is it.

The next step would be to share those notes to the same ancestor in FamilySearch Family Tree. To do this, login to FamilySearch and click on the blue tree to open up this individual's FamilySearch Family Tree entry highlighting the "notes" area at the bottom:

You should be able to see how there are notes on one side and not the other. There is a link at the top, however, that is only a note about the "Burial" information and the rest of the notes are not in FamilySearch Family Tree.

To bring those notes over, click on the "Notes" button at the bottom.

Here you see that the burial information is there, to simplify this whole notes section, we will move all of the notes over and change the title to "Additional Family Information". To do this, we highlight everything on the left side and use the keystrokes "Control" + "C" and the keystrokes "Control" + "V" to paste them to the other side. 

Note that information has now been copied over, the title was changed and a reason provided for adding the information, once we click on 'Save', that information will be there in FamilySearch Family Tree.

All that information is hidden behind a link labeled "Additional Family Information"

Clicking that link now brings up all the information on both sides showing it is in both locations:

Now that we have copied all the notes, we are done with this individual's update to FamilySearch Family Tree and we click the "Close" button to bring us back to our own database/family file. 

This is the way to add your notes in your AQ file to FamilySearch Family Tree.

Individual View

The Individual View is a great way to make sure all the information you've entered about a person in your family is there. It also allows you to see how they fit into the family, view the notes and sources altogether providing a snapshot of that individual.

The first section in the Individual View show a picture if you've put one there and all of there basic information along with any additional items you may have placed in "Other Events". Here is a sample from my grandfather:

The next section shows him as a child: 

Then here he is with his spouse and children:

The next section covers the Notes you've entered:

The last section is for the sources:

When you put this altogether you have a nice summary of the individual. It also provides an opportunity to see if you need to add an additional sources or documentation to the family member to have a more complete picture. For instance, you could add stories or have a link to blog stories or add additional pictures. 

You can also print up the whole summary with the pictures and all you have on this individual. Click here to view the summary in PDF format.

Either viewing it on the tab marked "Individual" in Ancestral Quest or creating a document to share,it is a nice way to provide a summary of information on a person in your family file! You also could add this kind of summary in various other places where you may have shared your family file.

AQ: FamilySearch Family Tree Certifications~What Does it All Mean?

   
     When FamilySearch Family Tree replaced nFS, features that were certified for nFS were no longer valid. A new set of certification requirements came into being and the re-certification process began with all FamilySearch partner products. 

     Each symbol above stands for a specific certification connected with interacting with the new FamilySearch Family Tree. 

Ancestral Quest is fully certified in each certification!

Let's review each certification in order to get a better understanding of how AQ  measures up to these new requirements.

     'TreeShare': the ability to fully read and write Family Tree data to match, compare, and modify records. This also includes required certification for sources, discussions, change history, and interaction with comunity members.

     'Sources': requires Tree Access or Tree Share certification. One can read Family Tree data allowing a user to match and reference online 'sources' that provide evidence of events and relationships. Sources can be records, photos, documents and media.

   

     'Discussions':requires Tree Access or Tree Share certifcation. One can read, write and comment on discussion treads for individual records in Family Tree.

     'Change History': requires Tree Access or Tree Share certification. One can read and list changes made by contributors to the Family Tree, sources, and discussions.

     
      'LDS Support': requires Tree Access or Tree Share certification. Specific data and features for 'LDS Members only' can only be accessed when the user is correctly logged into FamilySearch. Tree Access certification is necessary for reading ordinance information. Tree Share certification is necessary for requesting, changing, sharing, and printing the Family Ordinance Requests (FORs).

Extra! Additional Features with Family Tree!

'Notes' Allows users to view notes of individual records in Family Tree and exchange notes between Family Tree and the notes in their personal file. AQ is the only FamilySearch Tree Share certified program to have this feature!

     'nFS' Allows users to read other opinions of vital facts stored in new.FamilySearch (nFS). As not all information was migrated over to Family Tree this valuable information could easily be overlooked. AQ is the only FamilySearch Tree Share certified product to offer this read-only access to nFS data.
