Setting Parent-Child Relationships

Families come in all sizes, shapes and types, sometimes the relationships need to be adjusted for various reasons.

Ancestral Quest allows you to adust the relationship to both the father and the mother separately as needed depending on the individual situations.

To do this put the child in the main position in the "Family View" with the parents to the right of the child like this:

Click on the button that says "Other Parents/Rels" to fix the relationship of each parent to this child:

By changing the relationship here, it shows up in the family view listing here:

Note that if they are biological children there will be no relationship shown. It is that simple to show the relationships between children and their parents.

Take advantage of the many features of Ancestral Quest, you can always learn more about the features from the many tutorials available from our Learning Center.

Remember Ancestral Quest is fully FamilySearch Certified!

Setting Parent/Child Relationships

In our day to day life, relationships can change in a moment. Setting the relationships between parents and spouses is easily done in Ancestral Quest.

The first one to discuss in the parent/child relationship. Ancestral Quest allows you to set that to one of the following:
  • Biological
  • Adopted
  • Step
  • Foster
  • Guardian
  • Sealing

To do this, put the child in the main position in the Family View and click on the "Other Parents/Rels" button to the right of that child as shown below:

When you click the button, use the drop down arrow to expand the selections and choose the correct one for each parent:

Once the relationship has been set, click on OK and you are set for that child. If there are more children then repeat the steps till all the children's relationships involved have been labeled correctly.

That is how simple it is to set the correct relationships!

AQ: Parent child Relationships

Sometimes there are 'other' relationships between parents and children and knowing where to show that in Ancestral Quest makes it easy to state just what that relationship is.

The trick is putting the child in the primary position like this:

Next is to click on "Other Parents/Rel" which is immediately to the right of the child. This is the screen you'll see:

Note that you can adjust the relationship of the child to the Father and the Mother separately as well as verify that relationship. The choices are as follows:

Biological
Adopted
Step
Foster
Guardian

It is that simple to put in the correct relationship between parents and children!
