AQ Tree Tips ~ Improved

Genealogical research takes a tremendous amount of time, using AQs hinting through TreeTips can help anyone researching their ancestors. Entering a few pieces of information often can return addition sources and/or new information.

The new slick interface recently added to AQ 16 makes it even easier and leaves one plenty of room for family names in the pedigree view without truncating the names. The interface allows hints from FamilySearch Family Tree, FindMyPast, Ancestry, WorldConnect, Geneanet, MyHeritage and the individual Favorite sites added by the user.

Note there are two sections, one for hints and one for advanced searchers, each provides links right into the connected website. Once there the user is able to copy and paste the information in and attach a new resource. If the resource is from FamilySearch FamilyTree it can be moved through the lync and sync processes.

Two new videos showing how they work are available for view on our YouTube channel.

The first one, TreeTips-Research Assistance built into Ancestral Quest: Complete Guid. Updated reviews the various hints and searches.

The second one, TreeTips-Research Assistance built into Ancestral Quest: Case Study takes you step by step through the process of entering some information, searching with hints and the research features, adding the information to database and sourcing it all.

Each video provides great insights in extending your family history using the AQ's Tree Tips.

AQ and FamilySearch

Being FamilySearch Certified, allows Ancestral Quest 15 to link and sync with FamilySearch Family Tree (FSFT) and is listed in their app gallery under four products. 1) Ancestral Quest for Windows, 2) Ancestral Quest for Mac, 3) Ancestral Quest Basics (free) for Windows, and 4) Ancestral Quest Basics (free) for Mac.

This particular feature allows you to add family lines as well as search their current Family Tree database for additional family members currently not in your own files.

Additionally, you can bring over notes, sources, pictures and/or documents already there. For a newbie or someone who has done considerable research, these features are a way to get started or supplement your own research.

Seasoned researchers know the value of documenting their research, however, someone who is beginning their ancestral journal may not understand its value. Adding these documents to one's own research strengthens the validity of the family names added to the file.

If one has new found documents, they can also be added to the FSFT to aid in proving family links in a tree. We have a number of tutorials to aid an individual in learning how to complete any of these tasks.
  • Have a tree on FSFT, and wish to add additional lines from FSFT into one's file, watch how here,  Importing Family Lines
  • Moving notes to FSFT or from FSFT, watch this tutorial, Syncing Notes
  • Moving photos and/or documents, watch this tutorial, Memories Manager
  • Learning how to take advantage of the hints in Ancestral Quest, check out, Tree Tips
There are many more tutorials to add anyone at any point in their research.

Take advantage of this and many other great features of Ancestral Quest 15 today, click here to purchase, download and start enjoying this great program which helps you grow your family tree with only a few clicks.

Importing Ancestors from FamilySearch FamilyTree

Ancestral Quest links and syncs with FamilySearch Family Tree. This feature allows individuals to either download from Family Tree or upload to Family Tree, both are great helps with family history.

Some individuals have actually saved considerable time by entering their own name, linking themself to FamilyTree and then downloading multiple generations if their family lines are there in FamilySearch Family Tree. This saves them from having to re-enter everything into a new database/family file.

To begin the process of downloading information from FamilySearch Family Tree, make sure you have your own family file open:
  1. Click on "FamilySearch" in the menu at the top
  2. Highlight the person's ancestors you wish to import backwards from and write down the FS PID number
  3. Scroll down and click on 'Import Family Lines'
  4. At this point you'll be promted to enter in your user name and log in  for FamilySearch.org if you haven't logged in yet
  5. This brings up the following screen:

At this point, you'll need to make sure you have the radio dot in the "Download Ancestors of FamilySearch Person and then enter in their FS PID number.

Determine the following:
  1. How many generations to import
  2. Include families
  3. Include Spouses of children
  4. Import Place Names as 'Standardized by FamilySearch' or as 'Entered'
Once the above are selected, click 'OK' and the system will start the process. Depending on the number of individuals and generations it could take a short time or a long time. The bigger the import the longer it will take.

It is always recommend to back up your database before doing this feature.

Another thought is to do this into a separate database in order to check and verify it is indeed your family. Once you have done this you can easily import it into your database by creating a Gedcom file of that data and bringing it into your current full family file/database.

Next week we'll share how to upload your family data to FamilySearch.org.
